English Stirrups, Stirrup Leathers, and Irons for All Disciplines
The stirrups you choose will impact how well you ride. English stirrup irons and leathers, which attach the irons to the saddle, keep the rider stable while both mounting and riding the horse. Although irons were originally made of this material, today, irons are available in a variety of materials, including stainless steel, aluminum, and lightweight composites.
Stirrup irons are designed to serve many different purposes, from reducing weight to reducing stress on the joints of the rider. Quick-release stirrups provide safety for the rider. Different stirrup irons are made specifically for each riding discipline — and each discipline has its own rules for the type of stirrup allowed.
Best Types of Stirrup Irons by Discipline
- Jumper stirrups — Jumper riders crave speed and flash, stirrup irons that top the popularity list for jumpers are Flex-On, Acavallo Arena AluPro and FreeJump Soft'Up Pro Plus Irons.
- Hunter stirrups — Hunter and Equitation riders want a classic iron, with modern features. Current favorites for these riders are the Flex-On Hunter H Iron, Acavallo Arco Alupro Stirrups and the Herm Sprenger System 4 stirrups.
- Dressage stirrups — Dressage riders tend to go the classical route, favorite irons being the MDC Comfort Stirrups, Herm Sprenger Bow Balance Irons, and Traditional Fillis Stirrup Irons.
English stirrups come in various sizes. The size you choose will be based on the size of your riding boots. Be sure that the iron allows a half-inch of space on either side of your boot to prevent slipping or sticking.
