UPDATE- *Second* Horse Euthanized For Rabies

*UPDATE 8/25/17 This afternoon the Polk county Department of Health announced that

a second horse from the same farm has been euthanized and determined to have contracted rabies. At this time it is still unknown how the animals have come in contact with the disease. The rest of the herd was given rabies boosters after the first horse tested positive. The animals at the farm are currently under observation. It should be noted that immunity from the disease is not immediate post vaccination. It takes time for the animals to develop antibodies and immunity to the diease. This is story is still developing, we will update this article as more information becomes available.

Tryon, Landrum and surrounding areas please be sure your animals are up to date on their Rabies vaccine.

A confirmed case of rabies has been reported in a horse recently euthanized on  Red Fox Road in Tryon, North Carolina. At this point it is unclear how the horse obtained the disease. Please be observant when riding the trails or in areas where wildlife is present. Any animals behaving strangely should be promptly reported to animal control.
