This bit can be used with one or two reins. You can also use a pelham strap, which connects the bit ring with the ring a the bottom of the sides. A pelham strap connects the two reins, so just one rein is needed. The effect is a bit softer than riding with two reins. The pelham is used in combination with a curb chain.

The pelham is often used with strong horses. Because of the leverage effect created by the sides, the bit is fairly sharp. By using this bit it’s easier to ride a horse rounder in the neck. The longer the sides, the sharper it is.

Sweet iron will rust when in contact with (air) humidity. The surface rust tastes sweet and naturally stimulates saliva production. This will cause the horse to salivate more which will encourage the horse to take more contact.

The process of rusting (oxidation) changes the blue color of the Trust-bit to a brownish-grey. A sweet iron bit will develop an orange-brown rust layer on the mouthpiece if it is temporarily not used. This is easily removed by wiping it off with a damp cloth.

  • Tastes sweet
  • Stimulates salivation
  • Rust easily wiped off
  • Mares like the taste of the leather and accept the bit
  • Apply olive oil to the leather bit regularly to keep it supple
  • Make sure that the stitching points to the outside, i.e. to the opening of the mouth
  • The pelham is not suitable for inexperienced riders or horses

**Due to the contagious nature of the equine disease EHV1, and per the biosecurity measures suggested by the American Association of Equine Practitioners, The Farm House will no longer accept any returns on bits or bit accessories.**
