Find Your Ideal English Riding Saddle
Because each English discipline has specific requirements, and because each horse and rider are sized differently, it’s important to choose the right saddle for your needs. Each type of saddle is designed to give you optimal freedom of movement while keeping you in the right position to stay balanced.
The different English saddle types have a specific shape and placement of the seat as well as saddle flap length.
- Dressage saddles have a deeper seat that sits more upright and longer flaps than other types of English saddles. They also are typically larger.
- Jumping saddles are called close contact saddles because they’re designed to keep you close to the horse as you perform. These saddles have stirrups that are are more forward and are shorter than other types.
- All-purpose saddles are designed to work well for a variety of uses. Some all-purpose saddles are made for eventing, and offer a deeper seat and bigger knee roll since the rider needs greater stability.
- Pony saddles are built on a wider tree to accommodate the smaller, stockier body of a pony.
Sizing is important since the size of your saddle will impact your horse’s comfort as well as your own. Check out our saddle sizing guide, which will show you how to measure for an English saddle.
